At first, polders and farms.
\nThe house built against the dike.
\nThe channel flat, and frozen in winter.
\nSharp thistles among the grass in summer.
\nButtercups, hogweed and clover.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then a stately home on the outskirts of a city.
\nParks with old monumental trees and winding walking paths.
\nHuge iron gates and quiet dark ponds.
\nAutumn with dew and misty threads.<\/em><\/p>\n

It took a few winters.
\nAnd became more lost.
\nThe wandering began.<\/em><\/p>\n

A new spring.
\nThe brick villa with the small towers and high windows.
\nAssignments and goals. Listings of meals.
\nPlaying fields. The sun rising early over the grounds.
\nThe oak trees. The buildings.
\nThe residents who couldn\u2019t go home.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then there were rooms, under sloping roofs.
\nOld refrigerators in the garden.
\nMoss between concrete tiles.<\/em><\/p>\n

A city of canals and gates.
\nLater an apartment building next to a gas station.
\nBaskets hanging from the fenced balcony.
\nFlowers like stars, in purple, lilac, and white.<\/em><\/p>\n

A spring in stroboscopic light.
\nThe journey north, with its black soiled fields.
\nAn old caravan sheltered in a wall of trees.
\nThe brittle door away from the wind.<\/em><\/p>\n

Another winter.
\nThe nights cold.
\nThe thin sheeted house soon left.
\nHeading back, southwest.<\/em><\/p>\n

The land sloping gently into the sea.<\/em><\/em>
\nThe white lighthouse square against the sky.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\nAt night the rolling sound of tides.
<\/em><\/em>
\nPoles in the ground around the house.<\/em><\/em>
\nDigging holes in sand.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>
\nPlanting. Gardening. A fence. A bench. A tree.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

To travel away for one more time.
\nAn interlude in a big port city.
\nA tower block, long walks back and front the river.
\nThe summer hot and windy, with large casting shadows,
\ninto the future.
<\/em><\/p>\n

Then the long stay begins.
\nSettling by the sea.
\nThe plants densely growing the garden.
\nThe sealight brushing sky high over church towers.
\nYear after year. Season after season.
<\/em><\/p>\n

Until an autumn when someone left the world.
\nAnd the wandering started again.
<\/em><\/p>\n

This time from west to east.
\nAnd back again.
\nSeason after season.
\nYear after year.
<\/em><\/p>\n

The tree is still standing at the corner of the garden.
\nBright light sweeping the church\u2019s towers.
\nBig ships resting on the horizon.
\nThe evening light crimson red declining.
<\/em>
\n\nBut then in the east the sun rises brightly,
\nin soft shades of shimmering pink.
\nAbove dark standing forests of the deepest green,
\nand the other cherished home.
<\/em>
\n\nEvery day.
